PS5 Disc Drive Is Back in Stock, But You May Need to Act Fast

PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not For Long)

The PS5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.

The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, followed by the disc-less PS5 Pro in 2024. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer a degree of modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a disc drive separately. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony accessory has been consistently out of stock for months.

While some retailers have managed to restock, the situation remains precarious. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are selling the drive for the standard $79.99 MSRP. A third-party seller on Walmart was also found offering the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with limited stock.

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits

PlayStation Direct limits PS5 disc drive purchases to one per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.

The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is possibly linked to the November 7th launch of the PS5 Pro. Unlike the standard PS5, the Pro model doesn't offer a disc drive option, forcing users who want both the Pro's capabilities and physical media playback to purchase the drive separately.

With the disc drive still unavailable at major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
