Project Mugen Is Now Called Ananta, Devs Drop New Trailer

Jan 23,25

Remember Project Mugen, the anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's undergone a name change, now officially titled Ananta.

Initially unveiled at Gamescom 2023, Ananta (formerly Project Mugen) has finally released a new trailer after a prolonged silence. Further details are promised on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the official trailer:

The Name Change Explained (Or Not)

The developers haven't yet commented on the reason for the name change. Interestingly, "Ananta" means infinite in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of "Mugen" (infinite) in Japanese. The Chinese title also aligns with this theme.

The gaming community is divided on the rebranding, but generally relieved the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn to Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually impressive, the lack of gameplay footage gives Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage for some. Personally, I find Ananta's visuals more captivating.

A Curious Twist

Surprisingly, the development team has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only the Discord server remains, simply renamed. This fresh start has left many players puzzled, as renaming existing accounts would have been a simpler solution.

Ananta casts players as an Infinite Trigger, a paranormal investigator confronting supernatural chaos. The game features characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
