PlayStation Stars Program Ends After 3 Years

May 23,25

Sony has officially announced the termination of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, which had been operational for less than three years. As of today, new enrollments are no longer accepted, and current members who choose to cancel their membership will lose the opportunity to rejoin, with all reward points being permanently deleted upon cancellation.

For existing members, there's still time to accrue points until July 23, 2025, and any accumulated points can be redeemed until November 3, 2026. Despite the program's end, Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Stars' Digital Collectibles, such as the 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible for the foreseeable future.

Grace Chen, PlayStation's Vice President of Network Advertising, Loyalty, and Licensed Merchandise, stated in a blog post that the decision to wind down the current version of PlayStation Stars comes after evaluating player engagement and industry trends. "Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends," Chen explained. The focus now is on leveraging the insights gained to develop future initiatives.

No immediate replacement for the loyalty scheme was mentioned, and the specifics of Sony's findings from operating PlayStation Stars remain undisclosed.

Launched in July 2022, PlayStation Stars aimed to reward PS5 owners with points convertible to real cash value based on their spending in the PlayStation Store, as well as for completing various tasks such as surveys or trying out new games and system features. This initiative was positioned as a competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Rewards, though both programs have seen adjustments to become less lucrative over time.

Last summer, PlayStation Stars was unavailable for a month due to service issues. In October, Sony introduced several changes, including reducing the point expiration period from 24 months to 12 months and eliminating PlayStation Plus membership from point-eligible purchases. Now, the entire program is set to be phased out.
