PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, No Grand Slam

If you polled fans on which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising entry.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25; while not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking some real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic offers multiple control options. Using a controller, the right stick option (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings adjust the swing's forgiveness, allowing for casual or more challenging gameplay. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics and the option to play as Tiger Woods (the cover athlete) enhance the experience.

MyCareer mode incorporates narrative elements, offering choices that impact stats and gameplay. A humorous movie role with Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a fun touch. Earned VC unlocks gear that boosts stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of weekly refreshable Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promised features—ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies—suggest engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it less overtly exciting, but it appears to be a solid, low-stress option for golf enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. A playable demo is currently available.
