Nvidia RTX 5060 Launches: Consider Waiting

May 19,25

Nvidia unveiled the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti in April 2025, and now, the more budget-friendly RTX 5060 is hitting the market, following its announcement at Computex.

Priced starting at $299, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 boasts 3,840 CUDA cores spread across 30 Streaming Multiprocessors, making it well-suited for 1080p gaming. Nvidia boasts that the RTX 5060 can deliver remarkable performance at this resolution. For example, Team Green claims it can achieve 223 fps in Doom: The Dark Ages at 1080p with max settings, but this is with multi-frame generation set to 4x.

The key feature Nvidia is promoting with this generation of graphics cards is Multi-Frame Generation, and the RTX 5060, despite being the most affordable option, fully supports this technology along with the entire DLSS 4 suite. However, with only 30 SMs, there are limits to what DLSS can achieve.

It's worth noting that the $299 price is just the starting point. While some models will be available at this price, many RTX 5060 variants will be pricier, often featuring enhancements like factory-tuned overclocking and RGB lighting.

Reviews Are Coming... Later

Despite its affordable price tag, it's wise to hold off on purchasing the RTX 5060 until you see how it performs in real-world testing. Nvidia's performance claims are impressive but rely heavily on Multi-Frame Generation. Without early driver access for reviewers, comprehensive reviews won't be available for the first week or so of the GPU's release.

The RTX 5060 is expected to be a solid 1080p graphics card, but the broader Blackwell lineup has shown limited generational improvements. The RTX 5060 might see a performance increase similar to the RTX 5070 over its predecessor, particularly in traditional gaming without frame generation. When asked about performance improvements over the RTX 4060, Nvidia suggested that the RTX 5060 could double performance with frame generation enabled, but only offer around a 20% boost in games without ray tracing or frame generation – and that's under optimal conditions.

As with any high-cost tech purchase, waiting for reviews is advisable to ensure you're getting the best value. Those reviews are on their way, but they may take a few days to appear.
