Nintendo Switch Update 20.0.0 Enhances System Transfer, Icon Design

Nintendo has launched a new firmware update for the Switch in anticipation of the Switch 2 debut.

Nintendo Switch Firmware Version 20.0.0 introduces several significant updates to the eight-year-old console, paving the way for its successor, the Switch 2, set to launch in June, as detailed in the patch notes on Nintendo's official website.

A key feature is the new system transfer option to Nintendo Switch 2, now available in System Settings. This allows users to transfer data from their Switch to a Switch 2 via local communication.

If you no longer have access to your Switch before acquiring a Switch 2, you can upload system transfer data to a dedicated server for retrieval on your Switch 2.

Note that this process resets the Switch to factory settings. Nintendo advises performing this transfer only if you can complete it on the Switch 2. Otherwise, opt for local communication transfer after obtaining your Switch 2.

Some Switch users planning to sell or trade their original console for a Switch 2 are eager to use this transfer feature, as it eliminates the need to retain their old device. Others have raised concerns about the mandatory factory reset and the risk of data loss on Nintendo’s server.

Additionally, the update refreshes the design of certain user icons, which the community has already showcased. Notably, Donkey Kong’s updated icon reflects the new design from upcoming Switch 2 exclusives Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.
