Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: operation as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mouse-like mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "to stick to game console handles," and labeled as "mouse soles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, strongly hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they might be new, unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size of these tape pieces suggests they could cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to facilitate this mode.

The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. Therefore, the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
