Looks Like Nintendo Will Raise Its Prices in Canada — but for Switch 1 and Nintendo Switch Online Subscriptions, Rather Than Switch 2

PlayNintendo has confirmed an upcoming "pricing adjustment" for the original Switch in Canada, prompting concerns among fans north of the border that the older console may see price increases — more than eight years after its initial release.

A notice from Nintendo of Canada indicates that full details will be released later today, July 1, as pricing updates take effect on the official Nintendo Canada online store.

In explaining the shift, Nintendo’s statement simply notes the change is "based on market conditions," offering no additional explanation.

Nintendo has clarified that the newly released Switch 2 will not be affected by this pricing adjustment, although all variants of the original Switch — including the OG Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED — will be subject to the change.

The company also confirmed that physical and digital Switch games, along with accessories, will experience price revisions — a change that will affect Switch 2 owners, given the wide cross-compatibility of games and peripherals.

The broader adjustments will extend to Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions and amiibo figures, Nintendo added. If you're in Canada and rely on online access, it may be wise to renew your membership before prices go up.

Canada, like many other regions, has faced ongoing economic uncertainty due to new U.S. tariffs. Before the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo temporarily halted pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada to assess tariff impacts, later announcing price increases for select Switch 2 accessories.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa previously warned that tariff effects could reduce company profits by "tens of billions of yen," though he cautioned that raising the Switch 2's price to offset costs might significantly reduce consumer demand.

Many fans believe these price adjustments — targeting the original Switch and Nintendo Online subscriptions — are Nintendo’s strategy to manage costs without drawing attention by raising prices on the newer Switch 2 so soon after its launch.
