Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern: A 'Jerk' in Gunn's Superman Film

James Gunn's upcoming Superman film introduces a fresh take on the iconic superhero, and alongside it, Nathan Fillion brings a unique interpretation of Green Lantern, specifically Guy Gardner. In a candid interview with TV Guide, Fillion shared insights into his character's distinct personality, stating, "He's a jerk!" He elaborated on the essence of playing Guy Gardner, emphasizing that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, but fearlessness. "So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment."

Fillion also highlighted Gardner's hubris, noting that his character's overconfidence could be considered a superpower. "I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman," Fillion explained. "He can't!"

This new Superman film marks the inaugural entry in the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe under the chapter titled "Gods and Monsters." The film not only brings new life to the DCU but also coincides with HBO's upcoming series "Lanterns," which explores other members of the Green Lantern Corps. Kyle Chandler will portray Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart in this series, set to premiere in 2026.

James Gunn's Superman will feature David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The film, written and directed by Gunn, is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
