MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5

Warner Bros. Games has announced the upcoming closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, following the completion of its fifth season. The game's final season will launch on February 4, 2025, and conclude on May 30, 2025.

Season 5: A Final Farewell

The official MultiVersus (X) account confirmed the shutdown on January 31, 2025. A blog post on the official website detailed that Season 5 will be the game's last content update. This final season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both characters will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store).

No official reason for the game's closure has been provided.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online services cease, MultiVersus will retain offline functionality. Players can download the final version of the game between February 4th and May 30th to access a local gameplay mode, allowing solo play against AI or multiplayer matches with up to three friends. A local save file will be automatically generated, preserving earned and purchased content linked to the player's account.

In-game purchases were halted on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (premium currency) can be used until the game's shutdown.

A Brief History and Uncertain Future

MultiVersus initially launched in public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play platform fighter. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, but persistent technical issues, frequent disconnections, and microtransaction controversies ultimately contributed to declining player numbers. Reports indicated a significant drop in player count by July 2024.

At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support.

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT.
