MultiVersus Fans Bid Farewell: 'Game Holds Special Place in Hearts'

Jun 26,25

*MultiVersus*, the free-to-play crossover fighting game that launched in 2024, is preparing to shut down permanently. Player First Games confirmed back in January that Season 5 would be the final season, with servers scheduled to go offline for good at 5pm PDT (12 noon EDT) on May 30, 2025.

The game was considered a major disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery. During a November 2024 financial call, the company revealed that *MultiVersus* underperformed significantly, contributing to a $100 million writedown for its games division. This brought the total loss of the business to $300 million—further compounded by the poorly received launch of *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* earlier that year.

Just one month after the announcement, Warner Bros. made the decision to cancel its planned Wonder Woman title and close down three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games—the very studio behind *MultiVersus*.

In a Reddit thread titled "Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are the final things you have to say about the game," players took to the comments to reflect on their favorite memories and moments from the game’s brief lifecycle.

"Multiversus was a dream. It was a platform fighter focused on quick offense and dynamic 2v2 play that really emphasized team synergy,"

One player wrote. "Beyond just gameplay, the character casting was amazing. So many voice actors reprised their roles—Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, Eric Bauza as Bugs and Marvin, and more. The interactions between characters during and after matches were top-notch.

While some roster picks and move design choices were confusing—like Banana Guard and Ultra Instinct-inspired Shaggy—I can’t deny that most movesets were brilliant. There will never be another game quite like *Multiversus*."

Another fan shared:

"Nothing beats the feeling I had playing the beta back in 2022. I was completely hooked on the fast-paced nature of the game. I remember getting sick and all I did was play this title. I’ll miss it dearly. Hopefully, there’s a sequel or revival in the future."

"This game will always hold a special place in my heart—right next to PlayStation All-Stars,"

said one user mournfully.

"Tom and Jerry was one of the most unique and fun fighters I’ve ever played and reignited my love for fighting games,"

added another.

While some fans remain hopeful, most accept that the game is gone for good—especially considering "how much of an IP nightmare it would be to bring it back." That said, others are already working on ways to preserve the game once the servers officially shut down.

Despite its short lifespan, *MultiVersus* carved out a niche in the hearts of many players. As we noted in IGN's MultiVersus review, the game offered a refreshing take on the genre:

"MultiVersus may not be ideal for local multiplayer gatherings, but its engaging team-based mechanics make it a standout online platform fighter."

We awarded it an 8 out of 10.
