Feb 26,25

Get ready for another round of fatalities! The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot is officially on its way, and we've just gotten our first glimpse of a major addition to the cast: Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon unveiled a poster featuring Urban, styled as a promotional image for a fictional Johnny Cage film—complete with the over-the-top action one would expect from the character. The poster itself cleverly promotes the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.

Mortal Kombat 2 will directly follow the events of the 2021 film, which starred Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Joe Taslim. Joining the cast alongside Urban are Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

While plot details remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise provides ample source material for the sequel's narrative. The first film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat tournament and the longstanding conflict between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Initially planned for a theatrical release, the first Mortal Kombat film debuted on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025.

Our review of the first film awarded it a 7 out of 10, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles.”
