Mecha BREAK has its sights set on the broader entertainment world with plans for anime and manga adaptations, despite continued controversy regarding its monetization models. In an interview, CEO and Lead Producer Kris Kwok stated that the game's launch was just the beginning.

"Mecha BREAK is more than a single game; we intend to develop it as a full IP from multiple angles," Kwok explained. "Similar to the trailers I've shared, I want to create various anime series and novels. I am also developing a figurine."

He described the launch as akin to "the birth of a child," marking the start of a larger push into multimedia expansion. He previously cited Macross and Gundam as major childhood influences that shaped the game's creative direction.

High Cosmetic Prices, Locked Content, and Pay-to-Win Concerns

Mecha BREAK launched to strong initial interest, attracting over 130,000 simultaneous players on its first day. However, players noted a departure from the more open beta model, leading to mixed reviews on Steam.

Many critics have pointed to expensive cosmetic bundles (priced between $47 and $57 USD) and an auction house system they feel encourages a pay-to-win environment. There is also frustration that content freely available during the beta is now locked behind paywalls, with some players finding the free progression overly grindy.

Partial Improvements Implemented, But Monetization Woes Remain

Amazing Seasun Games, the developer behind Mecha BREAK, has acknowledged player feedback and made several updates since its official launch. In an April interview, Kwok stressed that the game is designed to be "fair and skill-based, not pay-to-win."

"The only thing separating players should be their skill. Key updates include unlocking all 12 mechs for free and offering complimentary character customization options like hairstyles and body types."

He added, "The PvE-focused Mashmak mode was also improved with new difficulty settings, bosses, and rewards. To ensure competitive integrity, modifications are disabled in ranked PvP modes but remain usable in Mashmak."

However, some players argue these changes don't fully resolve their concerns. They note that certain customization features from the beta are now paid content, and many remain dissatisfied with the restrictions on modifications in casual play.

Overall, while Mecha BREAK demonstrates potential with continuous updates and a clear developer vision, persistent monetization issues have disappointed some fans. How Amazing Seasun Games tackles these challenges in the future will be crucial for the game's long-term success and community trust.

Kwok explained that his deep admiration for iconic mecha creators heavily influenced Mecha BREAK's development. Having known Gundam and Metal Gear mecha designer Takayuki Yanase for years, Kwok brought him on board during a major project revision to ensure the game's visuals matched the inspiring mecha narratives.

He also detailed how renowned composer Hiroyuki Sawano initially declined involvement two years ago due to the project's unclear direction. However, after seeing the more polished world showcased in the August 2024 test, Sawano connected with the vision and ultimately agreed to compose an original track.

Shigenobu Matsuyama, known for his role as a producer and director on the Metal Gear series, also contributes. While Hideo Kojima is the original creator and director, Matsuyama provided crucial production support to realize Kojima's creative vision.

As a producer on Mecha BREAK, Matsuyama applies his experience from Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and other titles in the series to create immersive combat. His expertise in flight combat design directly influences the feel of Mecha BREAK's mech battles and overall gameplay.

The core concept of Mecha Break was to capture the dynamic action of Gundam games, aiming to deliver not just intense weapon combat but also the immersive sensation of piloting a giant mech.

"I've loved mecha and games since childhood, and creating a game like this has always been my dream," Kwok said. "As I got older, fulfilling that dream seemed as difficult as becoming a pilot or a race car driver. I feel incredibly fortunate to be in the game industry and to see my dream becoming a reality."

Mecha BREAK launched on July 1, 2025, for PC and Xbox Series X|S, with a PlayStation 5 release scheduled for a later date. For the latest news and updates about the game, be sure to check out our related article below.
