Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation

Feb 26,25

Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is reportedly attempting to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.

The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was seemingly abandoned a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of work and investment, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.

Liu's involvement offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game. The original Sleeping Dogs, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he undertakes an undercover operation within a Hong Kong Triad. The game received widespread praise, including an 8/10 score from IGN, yet never spawned a sequel. Whether Liu's efforts will succeed in securing the rights and moving the film forward remains uncertain.
