Tidepool Games has just released an exciting new game on Android that's bound to catch the attention of roguelike and pixel art enthusiasts. Named MageTrain, this fast-paced game takes heavy inspiration from the beloved Nimble Quest, blending elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into a unique gaming experience.

What’s MageTrain Like?

MageTrain challenges you to control a line of heroes that follow you like a snake. Each hero automatically attacks as you navigate through the arena, but your task is to strategically manage their positions. The placement of heroes in the line affects their abilities, adding a layer of depth to the gameplay. With nine heroes available at launch, including one who throws birds, you'll have plenty of options to experiment with.

As you progress, you'll explore eight different dungeons, face off against 28 enemy types, and acquire 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the way, you'll collect gold and power-ups to boost your chances of survival. Thanks to its roguelike structure, each run offers a fresh experience with branching paths and upgrade choices, similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL. There are no fixed levels, and you can't save your progress mid-run, so every decision counts. If you crash into an obstacle or get overwhelmed by enemies, you'll have to start over.

It Isn’t Slow-Paced

The fun of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run. Even if you lose, you gain valuable insights into when to play defensively, when to go on the offensive, and how to survive just a bit longer. This learning curve keeps the game engaging and rewarding.
