8$169.99 at LEGO StoreThe LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set introduces a new subgenre within the expansive LEGO Mario universe. This development sparks hope for more expansive Kart sets featuring characters like Luigi in a Sports Coupe or Princess Peach on a Cat Cruiser. While smaller playset-scaled Kart sets are available (see at Amazon), there's clearly a demand for larger, more detailed models.

We Build LEGO Mario Kart - Mario and Standard Kart

View 135 ImagesComprising 17 bags, the Mario & Standard Kart set involves two distinct builds. The first, the Standard Kart, is constructed using a LEGO Technic mesh secured by pins and reinforced with bricks to form the Kart's floorboard. The body shell, including rockets/exhaust pipes, side panels, and a steering mechanism, is meticulously assembled using rods and clamps.

Special attention is given to the steering mechanism, which elegantly combines form and function. It is attached to the front of the set via clamps and can be folded onto the hood like a hinged storm door. When the steering wheel is turned, the front wheels follow suit, enhancing the interactivity of the build.

Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the Kart's construction process is detailed and intricate, involving many small steps that culminate in a sophisticated final product. This juxtaposition of complexity and playfulness makes the build uniquely appealing.

Following the Kart, the Mario figure is assembled similarly to the Mighty Bowser set from three years ago. The construction begins with the torso, followed by legs, arms, and finally the head and hat. The hat's construction is particularly noteworthy, requiring two smaller builds to achieve its iconic, bent shape.

Building Mario provides an opportunity to appreciate the finer details that contribute to his iconic appearance, such as the hair peeking out from under his hat, the markings on his gloves, and the rolled-up cuffs on his jeans. This detailed process is reminiscent of assembling a jigsaw puzzle of a famous painting, where you discover nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Unfortunately, Mario cannot be detached from the Kart as his torso is anchored directly to the Kart's seat. While this design choice is understandable, it leaves room for creative modifications by LEGO enthusiasts eager to see Mario stand independently.

Nevertheless, the completed set is visually stunning. The Kart is mounted on a buildable stand that can be tilted and rotated, allowing for dynamic posing—whether uphill, downhill, or in a banked turn. Posing Mario with one hand on the steering wheel and the other in the air adds to the playful energy of the set.

LEGO's commitment to producing high-quality Mario-themed sets is evident with the Mario & Standard Kart. Alongside previous hits like The Mighty Bowser and The Piranha Plant, this set continues to set a high standard by balancing build quality with visual appeal. The introduction of more large-scale replicas of Mario iconography is a promising development for fans.
