Labyrinth Sequel Confirmed! Robert Eggers Set to Helm

Robert Eggers, fresh off his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth.

According to Variety, Eggers will pen the screenplay and helm this follow-up to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy film starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He'll collaborate on the script with Sjón, his writing partner on The Northman. While a sequel was previously in development with Scott Derrickson (director of Sinister) attached, a lack of progress since 2023 led TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures to enlist Eggers.

PlayThe original Labyrinth, released in 1986, featured Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who abducts Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character then embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm to rescue her sibling, aided by a troupe of Henson's iconic puppets.

This Labyrinth sequel isn't Eggers' only upcoming project. He's also slated to direct a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England, utilizing authentic Old English dialogue. One can safely assume werewolf transformations will feature prominently.

Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, premiered last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a real estate agent's unsettling encounter with a Transylvanian count, leading to vampiric horrors for him and his wife.

Nosferatu garnered four Academy Award nominations: Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. A review of Nosferatu is available here.
