Exciting news for fans of the beloved RPG series—Suikoden is making a comeback, albeit in a different form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has just announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG set to launch on Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play title is slated for a release later this year, though an exact date hasn't been specified yet.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Suikoden originated in 1995 and has been a staple in the RPG genre, developed and published by Konami. The creative mind behind it, Yoshitaka Murayama, drew inspiration from the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. The series is renowned for its deep narrative filled with political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. To date, there have been 11 entries in the series, including spin-offs, with the latest release back in 2012. Rather than a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami is venturing into the mobile gaming space with Suikoden STAR LEAP.

What’s in Store?

Suikoden STAR LEAP will introduce a fresh roster of characters while maintaining the series' iconic tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game will embrace the nostalgic pixel art style, keeping true to the classic Suikoden aesthetic. You can get a sneak peek in the teaser trailer below.

The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes pivotal to the world's creation. The protagonist, Hou, is the son of the village chief and has just celebrated his first successful hunt when tragedy strikes—his village is attacked, altering his life forever. Alongside his servant Hisui, who struggles with emotional suppression, his childhood friend Shirin, known for her strong sense of justice, and Shapur, a former general now serving as a butler, Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace.

While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked some concern among the fanbase. Long-time followers of the series have been eagerly awaiting a direct continuation, but instead, they're receiving a gacha-based mobile game. Only time will tell how this new chapter in the Suikoden saga will be received. Keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates and developments.
