This week, Netflix released a new trailer for their upcoming Devil May Cry anime, revealing that the legendary late voice actor Kevin Conroy will posthumously star in the adaptation. This news sparked curiosity about whether artificial intelligence was used to recreate Conroy's iconic voice. However, the anime's producer, Adi Shankar, quickly dispelled these rumors via a tweet, confirming that Conroy was recorded before his passing in November 2022 and that "no AI was used."

Shankar praised Conroy's performance, describing it as "amazingly nuanced" and expressing the honor of working with him. Conroy, widely recognized and celebrated as the longtime voice of Bruce Wayne and Batman across numerous animated films and TV shows, takes on the role of VP Baines, a new character introduced in the series. His voice can be heard at the beginning of the trailer.

PlayJohnny Yong Bosch, who voices Dante in the anime and played Nero in the video games, also shared his admiration for working with Conroy. He highlighted Conroy's legendary status, especially for his role in *Batman: The Animated Series*, and noted that their recording sessions occurred a few years ago, reflecting the lengthy process of animation production.

Back in July 2024, Conroy received acclaim for his posthumous performance in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3. Now, fans have another opportunity to appreciate his work following his passing at the age of 66, two-and-a-half years ago.

According to Netflix's official synopsis, the series delves into a plot where "sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms." At the center of this narrative is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, who is unaware that the fate of both worlds hinges on his actions.

Adi Shankar, who also serves as the showrunner, has an impressive resume. He is known for his work as the executive producer on the 2012 Judge Dredd reboot film Dredd, the development of the acclaimed Castlevania anime, and creating Netflix series such as The Guardians of Justice and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon. Additionally, he is set to executive produce an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.

The animation for Devil May Cry is being handled by Studio Mir, a renowned South Korean studio celebrated for their work on projects like The Legend of Korra and X-Men ‘97. The series is slated for release on Netflix on April 3, 2025.

The topic of generative AI remains a hot button issue within the video game and entertainment industries, which have seen significant layoffs in recent years. Generative AI has faced criticism from both fans and creators over ethical and rights issues, as well as its challenges in producing content that resonates with audiences.
