James Gunn: No CG Used in Superman’s Flying Face

May 12,25

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online buzz surrounding Superman's flying face after a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman movie sparked discussion.

Over the weekend, DC Studios unveiled a 30-second TV spot that included two new scenes: Lex Luthor disembarking from a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, possibly in search of the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll as he flies over an icy landscape towards an unknown destination.

PlayThe internet was quick to react, with many focusing on the shot of Superman in flight. Some viewers felt that Superman's face looked unnaturally still, despite his hair and cape moving dynamically in the wind. Speculation about "wonky CGI" arose, but Gunn took to Threads to clarify that no CGI was used on Superman's face in the scene.

A fan commented on the TV spot, praising the camera angle but noting that Superman's face seemed "a little off" and suggesting there was "plenty of time to refine the CG." Gunn responded directly, stating, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for part of the movie.

With Gunn's clarification, it's clear that David Corenswet's portrayal of Superman, including what appears to be a knowing smirk as he flies, is entirely natural. This has not stopped fans from debating the shot, drawing comparisons to the flying Adam Warlock from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, another project written and directed by Gunn.

Amidst the discussions about this brief clip, excitement for the Superman movie continues to build. The film is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, and marks the inaugural entry in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
