Italy's GAMM: Preserving and Exhibiting Gaming's Legacy

Dec 11,24

Rome boasts Italy's largest video game museum, GAMM (Game Museum), now open to the public in Piazza della Repubblica. The brainchild of Marco Accordi Rickards – writer, journalist, professor, and CEO of Vigamus – GAMM is a passion project dedicated to preserving and celebrating video game history. Rickards describes it as a journey blending historical context, technological innovation, and immersive gameplay exploration. GAMM builds upon the legacy of Vigamus, a Rome-based gaming museum that has attracted over two million visitors since 2012.

This expansive museum occupies 700 square meters across two floors, divided into three captivating thematic areas.

Explore GAMM's Interactive Exhibits:

  • GAMMDOME: An interactive digital playground featuring historical gaming artifacts (consoles, donations, etc.) alongside engaging stations. This area adheres to the 4E concept: Experience, Exhibition, Education, and Entertainment.

  • Path of Arcadia (PARC): A nostalgic trip back to the golden age of arcade games, showcasing classics from the late 1970s through the 1980s, with a touch of early 1990s nostalgia.

  • Historical Playground (HIP): This section delves into game mechanics, design principles, and the underlying structure of gameplay, offering a behind-the-scenes look at gaming history.

GAMM is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and Fridays and Saturdays until 11:30 PM. Tickets cost 15 euros. Visit the official GAMM website for more information.
