The Nintendo Switch 2 wouldn't be complete without a new Zelda adventure, and the latest Nintendo Direct revealed a surprising addition to the franchise: a new Hyrule Warriors game titled "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment." Developed by Koei Tecmo, this game serves as a prequel to "Tears of the Kingdom" and is set to launch this winter.

"Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment" brings back the thrilling gameplay of the Hyrule Warriors series, this time focusing on the ancient history depicted in "Tears of the Kingdom." The game features beloved characters like Zelda, along with Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. It explores Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle against Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding powerful magic, Rauru with his innovative sword-spear, and a brief look at other Sacred Stone wielders in action.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original "Hyrule Warriors" and "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity," which was a prequel to "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." "Age of Calamity" was notable for its unexpected storytelling approach to the "Breath of the Wild" narrative, earning it a 9/10 rating from us for being "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish." It will be fascinating to see how "Age of Imprisonment" might similarly diverge from the expected path.
