Hyper Light Breaker: How To Lock-On Target

Feb 28,25

This guide explains the lock-on targeting mechanic in Hyper Light Breaker, a Synthwave roguelite, and offers advice on when to use it. The lock-on system allows players to focus on a single enemy, but it's not always the best strategy.

How to Target Enemies

To lock onto an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will automatically select the closest target unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera will zoom slightly. Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible and within range.

While locked on, your movement will tend to circle your target, and fast-moving enemies can make the camera perspective erratic. To switch targets, move the right analog stick left or right. To cancel the lock-on, press the right analog stick again (or use the alternative binding in the settings menu). The lock-on will also automatically cancel if you move too far from your target.

When to Lock On vs. Free Cam

Lock-on is best suited for one-on-one combat, such as boss fights or against strong (yellow health bar) enemies, after eliminating other nearby foes. The locked camera can leave you vulnerable to attacks from enemies outside your immediate view.

For multiple enemies or weaker foes, free cam is generally superior. Lock-on can hinder your ability to react to threats from different directions.

Against mini-bosses or bosses, use free cam to clear weaker enemies first, then lock-on to the boss for focused attacks. During Extraction events, for example, prioritize clearing regular enemies before locking onto the mini-boss. This prevents distractions and allows for more effective combat.
