The Honkai series began with Honkai Impact 3rd, a free-to-play mobile action RPG that succeeded Houkai Gakuen 2, a 2D side-scrolling shooter. In 2023, Honkai Star Rail was released, another free-to-play mobile game but with turn-based gameplay. Despite sharing themes and some character designs, these games exist in separate universes with unique narratives.
