Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Delayed to May 2026
Rockstar has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, shifting from its original fall 2025 target.
In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret for the substantial delay of the highly anticipated title, poised to be a landmark entertainment launch.
"We deeply apologize for this later-than-expected release," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto is truly humbling for our team. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we finalize the game.
"Our aim with every release is to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand our need for additional time to meet the quality standards you deserve.
"We’re excited to share more details with you soon."
Rockstar’s announcement confirms the GTA VI release date but offers no new assets, prolonging the wait for Trailer 2. The statement omits details on launch platforms, fueling speculation that GTA VI could launch on PC alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in May 2026.
"Delays always carry some risk, and absolute certainty can tempt fate," said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, when asked by IGN in February about meeting the fall 2025 target. "But we’re very confident in our timeline."
In a new statement to investors on May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to push GTA VI into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.
"We fully support Rockstar Games in taking extra time to fulfill their ambitious vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to deliver a groundbreaking entertainment experience that exceeds fan expectations.
"While we recognize the significance of shifting release dates and the global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we roll out our robust pipeline, we anticipate sustained business growth and enhanced value for shareholders over multiple years."
The GTA VI delay clears the second half of 2025 for other major titles, giving games like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, EA’s Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s Ghost of Yotei more room to shine. Nintendo, gearing up for the Switch 2 launch, will likely benefit from this shift as well.
Developers who rushed releases to avoid clashing with GTA VI’s original fall 2025 window may be frustrated, however. Studios planning launches around May 2026 will now need to reassess their strategies.
