GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

The gaming community is buzzing with excitement over new Nintendo filings hinting at a potential new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, the FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2's specifications and suggests it might be a wireless Bluetooth controller. This has sparked speculation, especially after internet sleuths on Famiboards noticed that the label location in one of the filing images matches the back of a GameCube controller, right behind the C-Stick.

While it's possible this could be a new version of the Switch 2 Pro Controller, the prevailing theory is that it's intended for use with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service. This service already offers wireless classic controllers for retro games, and the addition of a GameCube controller could signal the long-awaited inclusion of GameCube classics on the platform. Nintendo fans have been vocal about wanting access to these games, but so far, the service has been limited to titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy. Could the Switch 2 be the gateway for a full GameCube library on Nintendo Switch Online?

Nintendo Consoles

The Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as the console's full game lineup and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among enthusiasts.

Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. The new console is expected to utilize gyro mechanics similar to those found in smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to secure the Joy-Cons, the Switch 2 will use magnets, allowing for more flexible attachment options. This change could allow players to customize the placement of buttons and ports, potentially leading to innovative gameplay mechanics.

Analysts estimate that the Switch 2 could retail for around $400, though some predict it might reach $500. June has been floated as a possible release month. While much about the Switch 2 remains a mystery, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to reveal more about the console.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
