Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

Mar 18,25

The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch and weeks after its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch fell short of the success needed to sustain the game and the studio. While the game initially attracted around 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent player count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms, sustained player engagement and revenue were insufficient to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding to keep Spectre Divide running. Mitchell acknowledged the current challenging climate within the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch. This announcement contradicts earlier statements in October 2024, where Mitchell assured players that the game was not in jeopardy and that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support it for an extended period.

IGN's August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide's tactical 3v3 gameplay and innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the game's rapid closure follows a string of other unsuccessful live-service titles, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord.
