Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling its plans for the exciting crossover between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy, set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, the team showcased a substantial selection of cards from both the main set and the specialized Commander decks. Fans are thrilled to see beloved elements from their favorite Final Fantasy games brought to life in new and unexpected ways.
The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy includes both a traditional Commander experience and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set encompasses the entire mainline series, spanning from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. On the other hand, the Commander Decks are centered around four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, with their respective Commanders being Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola.

During the Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East, several cards were revealed that beautifully capture the journeys of iconic characters from the Final Fantasy series. For example, Cecil from Final Fantasy IV features a mechanic that represents his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. Additionally, the summons of Final Fantasy are portrayed through a "Saga Creature" mechanic, blending the essence of both Magic and Final Fantasy into powerful but temporary entities on the battlefield.
A standout card is Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, with artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura. The card showcases Sephiroth's transformation across the FF7 universe, from a young fighter to his ultimate form as Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

No Final Fantasy set would be complete without the iconic Cids. This set features a Cid from each numbered Final Fantasy game, with a notable choice of the older Cid from Final Fantasy XV over his daughter, Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, and fans have been meticulously examining the art and additions. The adaptation of these four Final Fantasy games into Magic has been remarkably successful.
Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly integrate Final Fantasy lore. For instance, Skullclamp draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy 7 for its artwork.

Another poignant card, Together, Forever, resonates with Final Fantasy 10 fans, evoking the emotional journey of its protagonists through a ruined land on a somber pilgrimage. Several cards across the decks reference significant character moments, so be aware of potential story spoilers.
To balance the emotional weight, lighter moments from Final Fantasy 10 are also represented, such as the iconic and often memed scene depicted in Inspiring Call.

Wizards of the Coast has ingeniously incorporated Final Fantasy's humorous scenes into the cards. Clever Concealment references the Wall Market scene with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, while Secret Rendezvous captures the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7 in four different versions.

Fans have been uncovering the meticulous details that pay homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, includes numerous references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card, for example, reflects the gentleman's habit of disappearing and reappearing, creating a unique White/Black card. One user pointed out that the Archaeomancer's Map card uses a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map in Final Fantasy 14.
Final Fantasy 14 players have enjoyed the playful elements in the cards. There are humorous references, such as the "This is Thancred" meme, and a creative addition to the Rite of Replication card, which celebrates a memorable speech from A Realm Reborn.

The attention to detail in these cards is truly impressive and has me eagerly anticipating the full set. While the Commander decks have received much attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers from the panel have sparked curiosity about how other Final Fantasy games will be adapted into the main Magic set.
