The beloved classic strategy game, ROME: Total War, has just received a significant free update on Android from Feral Interactive. Dubbed the Imperium Update, it brings a host of gameplay tweaks, control enhancements, and quality-of-life improvements to the game that first hit Android back in 2018. Fans of this epic title can now dive into these new features, with the standalone expansions Barbarian Invasion and Alexander set to receive the same update next week.

What Does the Imperium Update Bring to ROME: Total War?

The Imperium Update integrates some of the finest features from Feral’s more recent mobile releases, such as Total War: MEDIEVAL II and EMPIRE. This update introduces three new control options: Positioning Mode, Melee Mode, and Automatic Deselection, enhancing your control over units and making battles more precise and engaging. Now, you can easily maneuver your army, agents, or fleets by simply tapping and holding, rather than manually dragging paths.

With Positioning Mode, you can fine-tune unit placements effortlessly by tapping and holding. The Group Grid feature simplifies managing unit groups with its collapsible selection menu. Melee Mode is particularly useful as it allows ranged units to switch to close combat when necessary, adding a new layer of strategy to your gameplay.

One of the most notable changes is the Command Slowdown feature, which automatically slows the game when you're issuing complex orders, ensuring you don’t miss a beat. Additionally, for the first time, ROME: Total War on Android (and iPad) now supports keyboard and mouse, providing a more familiar and precise control option for players.

The minimap has also been revamped to resemble the one in MEDIEVAL II, boasting smoother zooming and navigation. A handy reset button allows you to quickly return to the default view, enhancing your overall gaming experience.

The Imperium Update is already live for ROME: Total War on Android, available for download through the Google Play Store. Keep an eye out for the updates coming to Barbarian Invasion and Alexander next week.
