Jon Favreau, a Disney movie veteran, is teaming up with the House of Mouse to bring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Disney+ in a new series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will blend his expertise in live-action and animation for this project, serving as both writer and producer. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, this announcement promises a unique take on the classic animated icon.

Oswald, a significant figure in Disney's history, enjoyed a brief but impactful run with the company. Created by Walt Disney, he starred in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928 before a rights dispute led to his departure and the subsequent creation of Mickey Mouse (as detailed in our comprehensive look at Disney's 100-year history). Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022. This series represents a significant expansion of Oswald's role within the Disney universe. A release date is yet to be announced.

Beyond this project, Favreau remains busy within the Disney sphere, notably contributing significantly to the Star Wars franchise with The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. His long-standing involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both on and off-screen, is also well-documented, including directing the 2019 Lion King remake. He's also set to direct The Mandalorian and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.

Interestingly, Oswald's recent cinematic appearance came in 2023 with Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, released just a year after the character entered the public domain. Favreau's Disney+ series promises a very different interpretation.
