"Ex-Rockstar Dev: No More GTA 6 Trailers Needed Due to High Hype"

May 05,25

As the anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to build following the release of Trailer 1 in 2023, fans are eagerly awaiting any new information. However, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij has suggested that no more trailers should be released before the game's launch.

Rockstar released GTA 6 Trailer 1 to record-breaking viewership in December 2023, yet no further assets have been released since. The prolonged wait has led to a flurry of conspiracy theories among fans, including analyzing the holes in Lucia's cell door net, bullet holes in the car from Trailer 1, and even registration plates. The most notable theory, the "moon watch," accurately predicted the announcement date for Trailer 1, but has been debunked as a clue for the release date of Trailer 2.

The burning question remains: when will GTA 6 Trailer 2 be released? Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted that fans might have to wait until closer to the game's release, currently set for fall 2025, to see more. However, Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who worked on the series up to Grand Theft Auto 4, stated on Twitter that if it were up to him, he wouldn't release any additional trailers. He believes there's already enough hype, and maintaining an element of surprise would make the game's release even more significant.

Vermeij's stance was echoed when he responded to a user's suggestion that Rockstar might simply announce the release date without further trailers, calling it a "boss move." Despite this, the naming of the first trailer as "GTA 6 Trailer 1" implies more trailers may follow, though plans could change. Vermeij noted that Rockstar delayed GTA 4 just three months before its original release date in 2007, suggesting a similar "decision day" for GTA 6 might occur close to its current release window.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick emphasized the importance of maintaining anticipation and excitement for GTA 6, explaining that Rockstar prefers to release marketing materials close to the release date to balance excitement and unmet anticipation. This strategy aims to keep fans engaged without revealing too much too soon.

Mike York, a former Rockstar animator, suggested on his YouTube channel that Rockstar is intentionally fueling conspiracy theories and speculation by remaining silent about GTA 6 and the release of Trailer 2. He believes this tactic creates allure and mystery, encouraging fans to discuss and theorize about the game, thereby generating more hype without additional marketing efforts.

While fans wait for GTA 6 to hit the shelves, they can explore IGN's coverage on various related topics, including insights from former Rockstar developers and expert opinions on the game's potential performance on next-gen consoles.
