Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090: 32GB GDDR7 Memory and 575W Power Draw

Leaked specifications suggest Nvidia's upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card will pack a powerful punch. Sources indicate it will boast a massive 32GB of GDDR7 video memory—double that of the anticipated RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti. However, this performance comes at a cost: a substantial 575W power draw. The official unveiling of the RTX 50 series, including the RTX 5090, is scheduled for Nvidia's CES keynote on January 6, 2025.

The RTX 50 series, codenamed Blackwell, represents Nvidia's next-generation graphics card lineup, arriving over two years after the RTX 40 series launch. Building upon its predecessor, the new series will leverage proprietary Tensor Cores for AI processing, incorporating features like DLSS upscaling, ray tracing, and PCIe 5.0 support (on compatible motherboards). This launch follows the discontinuation of some RTX 40 series models (such as the RTX 4090D and RTX 4070), positioning the RTX 50 series to compete against AMD's Radeon RX 9000 and Intel's Battlemage GPUs.

Pre-CES leaks, initially reported by VideoCardz, offer further insights. Inno3D, an Nvidia AIB partner, showcased its iChill X3 RTX 5090, a triple-fan card occupying over three expansion slots. Packaging for this card confirmed the 32GB GDDR7 memory and the high 575W power requirement—a significant jump from the RTX 4090's 450W.

RTX 5090: High Memory, High Power Consumption

Key features of the RTX 5090, as revealed by Inno3D, include:

  • 32GB GDDR7 video memory (double the expected capacity of the RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti).
  • A 575W power draw, necessitating a high-capacity power supply.

Nvidia will officially reveal the RTX 50 lineup at CES on January 6th. The RTX 50 series will utilize a 16-pin power connector, though adapters will be provided. While performance promises are impressive, the RTX 5090 is expected to carry a premium price tag, potentially starting at $1999 or more. Nvidia has yet to confirm pricing.

The RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti will be announced alongside the RTX 5090 during Nvidia's CES keynote on January 6th. The consumer response to this new generation remains to be seen.
