EA Delays Battlefield to Dodge GTA 6 Competition

Apr 26,25

2025 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year for triple-A video game releases. With the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its exclusive titles, the gaming community is buzzing with excitement. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Later in the year, we're expecting major releases such as *Borderlands 4*, *Mafia: The Old Country*, and *Ghost of Yōtei*. And let's not forget the annual tradition: a new *Call of Duty* game from Activision, likely slated for an October or November release.

However, the crown jewel of 2025's lineup is undoubtedly *Grand Theft Auto 6* from Rockstar Games, set to hit PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall. Despite whispers of potential delays, Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, remains committed to the fall 2025 window. Yet, with so many heavy hitters on the horizon, EA's *Battlefield* series faces a challenging landscape. EA has scheduled the next *Battlefield* for its 2026 fiscal year, meaning a release before April 2026, which puts it squarely in the midst of *GTA 6* territory, not to mention competing with *Call of Duty* and *Borderlands 4*.

In a recent financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the competitive nature of the market. "Certainly we exist in a competitive marketplace," he stated, responding to queries about release timing. He emphasized the significant investment in the new *Battlefield*, with four studios working on it, aiming to make it the biggest in the franchise's history. "We want to make sure that we launch that into a window where we can deliver on the fullness of the promise of what *Battlefield* can be and grow the community to a level that is commensurate with the size of the game that we're making," Wilson explained.

He further noted that 2025 might require a nuanced approach to competition. "There may be some things happening in the year that may cause us to think differently about our launch timing," he added. EA is targeting a FY 26 launch window, but Wilson hinted at flexibility. "If we got close to that timeframe and believed that this wasn't going to be a great window for us, then we would take a look at what an alternate window might be that would give us the appropriate time, energy, and player acquisition opportunity for this *Battlefield* to be all that it needed to be."

Assuming *Battlefield* releases in November 2025, coinciding with previous releases like *Battlefield 2042* and *Battlefield 5*, a simultaneous launch with *GTA 6* could prompt EA to delay *Battlefield* to the first quarter of 2026, still within its fiscal year. Conversely, if EA initially plans a Q1 2026 release and *GTA 6* faces a delay to the same period, EA might consider advancing *Battlefield*'s release or even pushing it beyond the fiscal year, a significant move but one EA appears ready to contemplate.

The gaming industry is on tenterhooks, eagerly awaiting Rockstar's announcement of the *GTA 6* release date. This pivotal news will undoubtedly set the stage for other game launches. Whether *GTA 6* sticks to its fall 2025 schedule or shifts into 2026, the domino effect on other game releases, including *Battlefield*, will be significant.
