Dragon Age Star Addresses Backlash, Defends BioWare Against Critics

Dragon Age star Alix Wilton Regan has shared her thoughts on the criticism surrounding last year's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, attributing the mixed reception to those who "hoped the game or BioWare would fail."

The actor, known for voicing the Female Inquisitor in both Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, told IGN she was "deeply saddened" by the limited audience reach of BioWare's latest title, despite favorable reviews from critics.

In a recent interview discussing her notable video game roles, including her part in Microsoft's upcoming Perfect Dark reboot, Wilton Regan expressed her affection for her time as BioWare's Inquisitor, though she doubts the character will return.

"I’m truly heartbroken for BioWare as a studio facing such varied feedback on the game," Wilton Regan said about The Veilguard’s reception. "I found it to be a compelling title, showcasing BioWare at its best."

"Sadly, some seemed eager for the game or BioWare to stumble, either due to negativity online, which, unfortunately, is all too common, as we’ve seen."

At its release, The Veilguard faced online review-bombing. Criticism labeling the game as "woke" focused on its inclusion of a non-binary companion and options for players to identify as transgender. On Steam, Dragon Age: The Veilguard currently holds a 'Mixed' player rating, with user tags like "LGBTQ+" and "politics."

"Some criticized the game before its launch," Wilton Regan added. "It’s absurd. How can you judge a game, book, film, or show before it’s out? It’s an irrational position."

In January, EA noted that Dragon Age: The Veilguard fell short of expectations by about 50%, shortly after the game’s director, Corrine Busche, announced her departure. Meanwhile, layoffs affected other BioWare staff involved in the project.

That same month, BioWare confirmed the final update for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with no further content planned.

"I only wish the best for BioWare’s team, whom I deeply admire," Wilton Regan concluded. "I’m confident their talents will shine in their future projects, and we’re fortunate to see more of their work."

A smaller BioWare team is now developing Mass Effect 5, which has no set release date.
