Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Arrival: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Hinted by ESRB Rating Update

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, this rating update strongly indicates a new port is imminent.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive from 1997, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new game chapter. This updated ESRB listing suggests Bethesda is bringing the classic experience to current-gen consoles.

ESRB ratings typically precede a game's release by a few months, hinting at a relatively short wait for players eager to experience Doom 64 on modern hardware. The absence of a PC listing in the updated rating doesn't rule out a PC version, given the 2020 release included a Steam version. Furthermore, Doom modding communities have already created ways to experience Doom 64 using classic Doom titles.

Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles adds further credence to the possibility of a stealth launch for Doom 64. The ESRB rating's existence, prior to any official announcement, mirrors past instances where ESRB listings leaked upcoming game releases before official announcements, such as with Felix the Cat's 2023 re-release.

Looking beyond Doom 64, fans can anticipate Doom: The Dark Ages, rumored for a 2025 launch, potentially receiving an official release date as early as January. Re-releasing classic titles offers Bethesda a strategic way to build anticipation for the next main installment in the acclaimed Doom franchise.
