Codemasters has officially announced that no additional expansions will be released for the 2023 EA Sports WRC title, marking the conclusion of their journey with off-road racing games. In a statement published on EA.com, the studio expressed gratitude for their decades-long journey with rally enthusiasts, which began with classics like Colin McRae Rally and evolved into the acclaimed Dirt series. They emphasized their dedication to pushing boundaries and delivering authentic rally experiences while collaborating with industry icons.

The World Rally Championship community has acknowledged the news, hinting at an ambitious new direction for the gaming franchise with further details expected soon. This decision comes amidst EA’s acquisition of Codemasters in 2020 and recent reports of significant layoffs across the company, including Respawn Entertainment.

Codemasters has been a pioneer in rally gaming since 1998 with Colin McRae Rally, which later transitioned into the Dirt series. Notable milestones include the reinvention of the series as a hardcore simulation with Dirt Rally in 2015. EA Sports WRC, launched in 2023, marked the return to an officially licensed WRC experience since Colin McRae Rally 3 in 2002. Despite receiving praise for its core mechanics, the game faced criticism for technical issues, which subsequent updates attempted to address.
