Captain America: Brave New World Nears $300 Million Global Box Office After 68% Domestic Drop Second Weekend

Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is proving challenging. While the film has grossed approximately $289.4 million globally, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability.

According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a global box office gross of around $425 million to break even. The initial $100 million domestic opening, exceeding expectations, was followed by a considerably steeper decline to $28.2 million in its second weekend. This mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.

While the film currently boasts $141.2 million in domestic and $148.2 million in international revenue, Comscore data indicates a worldwide gross of $63.5 million during its second weekend. Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 to date, the substantial drop suggests less audience enthusiasm than anticipated, a trend noted by Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian as "the new normal for Marvel movies." Deadline projects a final global gross of approximately $450 million.

The film's release coincided with largely unfavorable reviews, including a 5/10 score from IGN, which criticized the film's lack of innovation despite strong performances from its cast.

Marvel Studios and Disney are banking on a strong rebound to reverse the recent underperformance of MCU films (excluding the successful Deadpool & Wolverine), building momentum for the upcoming Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
