Devolver Digital Keeps Trolling the Gearbox CEO

As Borderlands 4 approaches its launch, developer Devolver Digital continues to poke fun at Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford for his previous remarks. In a July 10 post on X (formerly Twitter), Devolver announced the early access release of their online cooperative shooter, Mycopunk, while simultaneously taking a swipe at Borderlands' pricing.

Pitchford faced significant backlash from the community after he suggested that the rumored $80 price tag for Borderlands 4 wouldn't be an issue for "real fans." Although he later apologized, Devolver appears intent on keeping the joke alive.

With Borderlands 4 reportedly priced at $70, Devolver quipped that fans could purchase Mycopunk for just a fraction of that cost. This isn't the first time they've targeted Pitchford; back on May 21, they tweeted, "You're gonna be able to buy Mycopunk for you and three of your friends for the price of one copy of Borderlands 4."

Devolver is known for its unconventional and often satirical approach to the gaming industry, marked by memorable (and sometimes controversial) marketing campaigns. The publisher consistently champions unique and diverse titles from independent developers, helping them stand out in a crowded market. Their notable portfolio includes the Hotline Miami series, Serious Sam, Enter the Gungeon, and Katana Zero.

Despite the apparent rivalry, Borderlands 4 and Mycopunk share some common ground as sci-fi shooters with a cel-shaded art style. Devolver's tweet could be seen as a clever promotion for Mycopunk's early access launch or simply a pointed critique of rising game prices and Pitchford's comments.

First Look: Vex's Official Character Short and Gameplay Overview

With the release of Borderlands 4 on the horizon, Gearbox is debuting a series of character shorts in the lead-up to launch. First up is Vex, a new Vault Hunter who offers a fresh twist on the classic Siren class. Her short film reveals a gritty origin story: once a retail cashier, she awakens her Siren powers during a chaotic event and flees her old life.

Her gameplay overview provides a glimpse into her unique abilities, including Incarnate, Dead Ringer, and Phase Phamiliar. Unlike previous Sirens who specialized in crowd control and support, Vex summons creatures like Reapers, Spectres, and a giant spectral cat named "Trouble" to unleash elemental havoc on enemies.

Gearbox and 2K Games will release more character shorts and trailers in the coming weeks for other new Vault Hunters, such as Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe.
