Blade Trilogy Writer on MCU Reboot: 'Why the Delay?'

May 13,25

The writer behind the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to assist Marvel Studios in revitalizing the stalled Mahershala Ali-led Blade reboot. Despite being announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 with a planned release for November 2025, the project has faced numerous setbacks and has been removed from Marvel's release schedule.

Recent developments suggest that the project may be further from realization than ever. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the project had fallen through. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who was to work on the film set in the 1920s, and actor Delroy Lindo, who was attached to star alongside Ali, have also shared their disappointments over the project's collapse.

Despite these setbacks, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige reassured fans that they are dedicated to the character and Ali's portrayal of him, although no new release date has been confirmed.

Goyer, who wrote and directed entries in the original Blade trilogy, expressed his confusion over the delays in an interview with ScreenRant, stating his readiness to contribute to the reboot.

Meanwhile, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which featured a cameo by Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, grossed $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has advocated for a send-off film for Snipes' Blade similar to Logan, emphasizing the original Blade film's pivotal role in paving the way for the superhero genre and the MCU.

Reynolds is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men movie, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to take center stage and be utilized in innovative ways.
