In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you encounter are not only fierce but also uniquely memorable. Among them, Rompopolo stands out as a particularly distinctive Brute Wyvern, and here’s your guide to defeating and capturing it.

How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds

You first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. As you journey through the Oilwell Basin region toward Azuz City, Rompopolo will make its appearance, and you’ll need to defeat it to progress. Once you’ve defeated Rompopolo at least once, it will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then battle it repeatedly by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this fight, equip your hunter with water-element weapons, obtainable from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, outfit yourself with gear that provides fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Alternatively, craft a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general Defense Charm I. Before the battle, boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo, a unique wyvern, employs a variety of gas-related attacks due to its saggy, gas-filled skin. It can also inflict poison, so carry Antidotes. Your Palico can help cleanse most ailments, but it's not always reliable. Be vigilant for these main attacks:

  • Arm Swipe: Rompopolo uses its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This attack has limited range and is easily dodged.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe: It charges forward, raising both arms to perform an arcing swipe.
  • Tail Swing: Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe: It sprays a stream of poison gas or charges while swinging its head and spraying poison.
  • Oil Explosion: From a distance, Rompopolo injects gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge to avoid damage.
  • Charged Oil Explosion: Later in the fight, it pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this as it inflicts significant damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with other *Monster Hunter* games, you have the choice to capture or kill Rompopolo near the battle's end. To capture, weaken it until your Palico says it looks "tired." Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out and complete the capture.

Both capturing and killing Rompopolo are viable, with the main difference being the item rewards. While the specific differences are not yet confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops:
