Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the last major update for the game. This final update has sparked a significant increase in player numbers, propelling BG3 just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 players at the time of writing.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated this surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the game's thriving mod support for allowing the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to embark on a new creative venture.
In light of this, D&D's owners, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Announced back in November 2024, Patch 8 has been eagerly awaited by the community. This final update brings 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and much more. Larian Studios provided a comprehensive breakdown of Patch 8's contents on the BG3 website. Compared to the November 2024 announcement, the latest patch notes boast an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that BG3 concludes on a high note.
Larian Studios has poured their heart into enhancing BG3, evident from the myriad of fixes and updates in this final version. While this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community.
