Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Dec 30,24

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring extensive exploration of Baldur's Gate. The decision's weight is amplified by the possibility of companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) might be needed to influence companion choices. Spoilers ahead!

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This choice hinges on player preference. The Emperor warns that releasing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (within the Astral Prism), the choice is stark: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

  • Siding with the Emperor: This leads to Orpheus' demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach might disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this grants victory over the Netherbrain, it may disappoint players invested in these characters.

  • Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to align with the Netherbrain. A party member might still transform into a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, will willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Choice

In short: choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you accept the risk of tentacled companions. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.

The Moral High Ground?

The "good" choice depends on individual perspectives. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices, though this might lead to a Mind Flayer transformation. Ultimately, multiple endings exist in BG3, allowing for a potentially satisfactory resolution for all.
