Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next project, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 this year, Larian’s full attention is now dedicated to crafting their next title, which they promise will be a significant departure from their previous work.

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, recently reflected on the studio's journey via Twitter, highlighting the tremendous success of Baldur’s Gate 3. He hinted at more to come, stating, "But the story ain't over yet." This tweet sparked curiosity and excitement among fans about what lies ahead for the studio.

In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that their next game will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, nor will it be related to Dungeons & Dragons. Instead, they are eager to explore a completely new concept, having failed to generate internal enthusiasm for another Baldur’s Gate installment.

Back in November 2023, Vincke teased the studio's next big project, expressing excitement and hinting at its potential to push boundaries. He noted, "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries." This statement came in response to Baldur’s Gate 3’s multiple nominations at The Game Awards.

In an earlier interview with IGN in July 2023, before Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch, Vincke mentioned a future project in the Divinity: Original Sin series. However, he emphasized that the studio would need a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3, suggesting that Divinity might not be the immediate next step.

With Larian's history rooted in fantasy RPGs, speculation is rife about the nature of their next game. Could it be a venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps even an entirely new genre? Given the media blackout, it might be years before fans get a glimpse of what Larian has in store.
