Avowed director Carrie Patel has recently left Obsidian Entertainment, a renowned RPG developer, shortly after the launch of their latest game. Patel announced her departure via a LinkedIn update, revealing her new position as Game Director at Night School, a studio owned by Netflix and known for the Oxenfree series.

"I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as Game Director at Night School: A Netflix Game Studio!" Patel wrote, expressing excitement about her new role. While at Night School, Patel will again take on the role of game director, though details about her current project remain undisclosed.

Night School gained recognition for the Oxenfree series, with the latest entry, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, released in 2023. The studio also ventured into the Black Mirror universe with Thronglets earlier this year, amidst reports of layoffs. Previously, Netflix had closed another of its studios that was working on a AAA game led by Halo veteran Joseph Staten.

Patel, who spent over a decade at Obsidian, contributed to several acclaimed titles including The Outer Worlds and the Pillars of Eternity series. She assumed the directorial role for Avowed after the project underwent a significant reboot. Initially envisioned as a darker fantasy akin to The Elder Scrolls, with a single open world and multiplayer co-op, Patel guided Avowed to become a more vibrant and distinct game, featuring multiple large maps and a solely single-player experience.

However, she will not be involved in these future developments. Obsidian recently unveiled a development roadmap for Avowed, promising minor updates like a Photo Mode and New Game Plus over the next six months.

IGN's review of Avowed praised its worldbuilding and character writing, noting, "With awesome worldbuilding and stellar character writing, Avowed reminds me why I fell in love with Obsidian's RPGs in the first place. However, the bigger picture is that it plays it quite safe, with a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that's more familiar than evolutionary."

Obsidian's upcoming project, The Outer Worlds 2, is set to be highlighted at the Xbox Games Showcase in June.
