Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's physical appearance and choose a Background, which provides a pre-game backstory and narrative context. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.

Background Details:

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly character hails from Bragganhyl Academy, their treatise on soul lineages causing conflict with a local lord. Imprisoned, they were recruited by the emperor for the imperial archives. They possess knowledge of the occult, legal matters, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: This Background features a tragic past, their mystical insights leading to suspicion and exile after a village crop failure. The emperor took them under their wing as a personal mystic. Court Augurs possess spiritual awareness and dialogue options reflecting their magical connection and understanding of the Gods. This is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character.

• Noble Scion: A product of a wealthy but morally corrupt noble family, this character's family's downfall led them to seek the emperor's favor. They serve as a valuable ally to the empire. This is suitable for players wishing to maintain imperial loyalty.

• Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this character prefers wilderness to city life and politics. Their tracking and espionage skills make them a valuable asset to the empire. This Background lends itself to a hunter-style playthrough.
