The latest entry in Ubisoft's renowned stealth-action open-world series, Assassin's Creed Shadows, has finally arrived. But how does it stack up against its predecessors? We're inviting you to weigh in. While over 30 games have been released under the Assassin's Creed name, this list focuses solely on the mainline titles—so you won't find any mobile, side-scrolling, VR, or spin-off games like Bloodlines or Liberation included.

The franchise began in 2007 when Desmond Miles entered the Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor Altaïr. Now, 18 years later, the series transports players to 16th-century Japan, where they assume the roles of Naoe and Yasuke. This new installment marks the 14th core game, and I've taken the liberty of ranking them using one of our IGN Tier Lists, based entirely on my personal enjoyment of each title. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains the title closest to my heart. The seamless blend of island exploration, naval combat, and a vibrant cast delivers what I consider the most well-rounded Assassin's Creed experience. It shares the S-tier spot with Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly propelled the series into the spotlight. I've also placed Valhalla in the A-tier—a decision that might raise some eyebrows, but I was thoroughly captivated by its Viking-inspired combat and found myself hooked on the Orlog minigame. Joining it is Unity, whose stunning recreation of Paris during the French Revolution continues to impress even a decade after its release.
