First Look: Actual Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

May 22,25

Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a game cartridge for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch next month. The latest video from the Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots for up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges, allowing for seamless storage and portability.

As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges are the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, ensuring that the Switch 2 console requires only one cartridge slot to play games from both generations. However, there is a notable difference: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be universal across all Switch 2 games, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in the video. This red color is a clear visual indicator, distinguishing them from the original Switch cartridges. Additionally, the top of the cartridge's printed design sticker features the Switch 2 logo, further differentiating it from the original Switch design.

The official Switch 2 carrying case not only has room for the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached but also includes space for six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps, making it an essential accessory for any Switch 2 owner. For those without access to the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.

Apart from the color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to the original ones, including the unique foul-tasting coating designed to prevent accidental ingestion. Takuhiro Dohta, the director of the Switch 2, emphasized the safety measure in a previous interview with GameSpot, stating, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
