Players & Cards
Tong-Its is designed for three players and uses a standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards, excluding jokers. The cards rank from Ace (1 point) to King (10 points), with Jacks, Queens, and Kings each valued at 10 points. All other cards are worth their face value.
Objective
The goal of Tong-Its is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding cards, aiming to minimize the count of unmatched cards in your hand. A run is made up of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J. Note that A-K-Q does not count as a run since aces are considered low. A set is formed with three or four cards of the same rank, like ♥7, ♣7, ♦7. Each card can only belong to one combination at a time.
The Deal
The first dealer is chosen at random, with subsequent dealers being the winner of the previous hand. Cards are dealt one at a time counterclockwise, starting with the dealer, who receives thirteen cards, while the other players get twelve. The remaining cards form the stock, placed face down.
The Play
Each turn in Tong-Its includes the following actions:
- **Draw**: Begin your turn by taking a card from either the top of the stock or the discard pile. If choosing from the discard pile, you must be able to form a meld with it and subsequently expose the meld.
- **Exposing Melds**: You can choose to expose valid melds (sets or runs) from your hand on the table. Melding is optional when drawing from the stock, but you must lay at least one meld to open your hand. A special case allows you to lay a set of four face down if not completed with a discard pile draw, keeping it secret for bonus points.
- **Laying off (sapaw)**: Optionally, add cards to existing melds on the table, whether yours or another player's. This can be done without opening your hand and limits the other player's ability to call Draw on their next turn.
- **Discard**: End your turn by discarding one card from your hand onto the discard pile face up.
