Nonograms, also known as Hanjie, Griddlers, Picross, Japanese Crosswords, Japanese Puzzles, Pic-a-Pix, "Paint by numbers" and other names, are engaging picture logic puzzles. In these puzzles, players must color or leave blank cells in a grid according to numbers provided at the side of the grid to reveal a hidden picture. These numbers represent discrete tomography, indicating the number of unbroken lines of filled squares in each row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" means there are groups of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, separated by at least one blank square.

Solving a nonogram involves determining which cells should be filled (known as boxes) and which should be left empty (known as spaces). Both decisions are crucial, as spaces later help in determining the spread of a clue. Solvers typically use a dot or a cross to mark cells they are sure are spaces.

A key rule in solving nonograms is to never guess. Only cells that can be determined by logic should be filled. A single incorrect guess can spread errors across the entire puzzle, potentially ruining the solution.
